His album "Ghost Dance" brought him Artist and Album of the Year at the 2000 Native American Music Awards. As talented a painter as he is a songwriter, Bill dug deep within his music and his art to create a spiritual memorial to the massacre at Wounded Knee. With the words to "Ghost Dance" written on the horse beside the portrait of a warrior who fought the White Man but is able to overcome bitterness with faith in a better tomorrow, Bill has created a powerful and original artwork. "As a Native American musician and visual artist, I consider my art and my music gifts to be from my Creator. It was a special challenge to be able to paint on something other than canvas, especially a full-size pony. I believe it brought out a new me. The artistic environment in Santa Fe, the experience of painting in a studio surrounded with other beautifully painted ponies, and the opportunity to 'give back' was a surreal and spiritual experience for me. From The Trail of Painted Ponies. Gingerbread Pony. Made of resin. Measures 6" high. Artist: Lynn Bean Come Christmas in artist Lynn Bean's home, baking gingerbread cookies was a cherished tradition. "As my mother rolled out the dough, my sister and I would press the cookie cutter designs of stars, bells, animals and people. The yummy smell of gingerbread baking would fill the kitchen. After the cookies cooled we would add frosting and decorations. Then we would eat the rejects, making enough to take to Grandma's house or for friends at school." With these magical memories in mind, Lynn designed a Pony of frosted cookies and candies, complete with a Christmas country scene of an old barn and a gingerbread family leading a pony among the trees and bells of the holiday. Deer and wolves that speak to man, arrows that carry prayers, serpents that bring rain - are all real in the Huichol Indian belief system. The Huichol live in the Sierra Madre Mountains of central Mexico, and for centuries these spiritual people have been beading decorative items to use as offerings to the gods. Their world is rich in symbolism and imagination, and they encode their spiritual knowledge through their art. The Trail of Painted Ponies was honored when a Huichol couple agreed to create an original Pony intricately beaded with images that represent life and enlightenment. Artist: Nevena Christi Sponsor: Back at the Ranch A horse that reflected the style and costumes worn by Gene Autry and Roy Rogers in old Hollywood westerns -- '30s and '40s cowboy retro, in other words -- was the initial dream of this fine artist and former fashion designer. To give it an edge, she also wanted the horse to look like it was made of tooled leather, with a vintage saddle cinched on its back. Nevena now lives in El Paso and runs Rocketbuster Boot Company, where some of the wildest cowboy boots you will ever see are handmade. A story is told about a riderless Appaloosa, flamboyantly painted with symbols that portray a warrior's bravery during battle, wandering the prairie as if in search of his master. According to this tale, the horse would never let anyone else ride him, though many tried. The lightning bolt on his face, the sun on his shoulder, the circle around his eye, the handprint on his flank, the feathers in his mane and tail marked him as a horse with powerful medicine. And so he was allowed to roam the plains freely... to be eventually memorialized by New Mexico artist Loran Creech.
